Keep the door locked...
Sam is excited to spend a week at her uncle's remote lake cabin. It's a chance for her to focus on her art without distractions no neighbours, no phone, and a small radio as her only contact with the outside world.
But there's something deeply unnatural lingering in the lake.
The radio's news reports talk about disappearances on a nearby hiking trail. The car won't start. And Sam starts to believe she's being stalked when she catches glimpses of a tall, strange man standing at the end of her dock, staring intently into the swirling waters below...
"A beautiful marriage of supernatural to a terrifying scenario... if you enjoy a suspenseful, frightening horror story, then Dead Lake is most definitely for you." -Twisted Book Junkie
Dead Lake edition by Darcy Coates Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I love a good horror story that will pull me in from page one, and hang on to me through the end. Dead Lake did it all for me.Sam (MC) needs a dozen paintings ready in a week for a gallery exhibition, but she’s misplaced her muse. Uncle Pete offers her his remote cabin by the lake in the hopes she can find inspiration to complete her work in time. What she finds is the farthest thing you could imagine from a muse. Yet somehow, the paints are being done, by her hand, but she doesn’t remember doing them.
The one restriction Uncle Pete put on Sam is not to go out on the lake’s dock because it’s in disrepair and there is a danger of falling through the boards. Her first night there, she spots a man kneeling at the end of it looking in the water. She’s supposed to be alone in the middle of the nowhere, and there’s no cell phone reception.
This is a fast- paced read and it will keep you turning the pages. The way Darcy Coates unfolds this story will leave you rubbing the chills from your arms and looking over your shoulder.

Dead Lake edition by Darcy Coates Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Sam is borrowing her uncle's remote cabin for a week to prepare for her upcoming at show. Upon arriving she learns of unexplained disappearances of other tourists spanning a number of years. Initially comfortable, Sam starts to experience odd occurrences - sightings of a strange man at the end of her dock, painting pictures of a scary stranger in her sleep.
Though the story was reasonably suspenseful, the main character made me want to bang my head against the wall. Leaving the door unlocked, failing to check on her car (the only way out of the wilderness), running through the woods in the middle of the night...all those things we see in horror movies that make us throw our popcorn at the screen were all present. Yet I see promise in the author in this quick read. Three and a half stars.
This was a real thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat right up until near the end
when the super natural kicked in, then I was as good as gone as it's not what I care for. My fault for not noticing or knowing this is what this author is noted for. The story was well written and the characters especially well developed. The story was a real page turner but it lost me when it became apparent that it concerned this supernatural.
I have read several books by this Arthur and have never been disappointed. Ms Coats is very descriptive of all scenes emerging you into the area that you feel that you are either on the spot there or watching a movie. In this story a young lady Sam has a week to produce 12 paintings for a art gallery showing, but she has a case of artist's block. Her uncle told her to go up to his cabin in isolated area of the woods away from the hustle and bustle of the city to focus. He tells her there are no modern facilities, phones, TV's, or neighbors to bother her and she can just relax and paint, the nearest occupation is a Ranger Station about 2 miles away, but he has a ham radio available in case she needs it for emergencies. Sam takes him up on it and drives out to the cabin. Upon arrival she is impressed with the location, condition and appearance of the cabin. It is surrounded by large hills in the background, trees around the house and a lake off to the side. She thinks this just might be great for her. She settles in, but decides to wait until tomorrow to begin painting. That is where things begin to happen beginning with her arising in the mornings noticing there are paintings that began to appear on the easels daily. She does not remember painting them, but the technique is her style so she is baffled. This is where I stop with the story, for when I read a review I think some just about tell the story and spoil it for me. This is a very interesting book and it as all Ms. Coats books do captured my interest from beginning to end. I always find myself not wanting to put her books down. I usually say just one more chapter then that is it for now, but then something catches my interest and I continue. This story has a little area that is gruesome, but she doesn't linger so I do not think it is so intense. This book is suitable reading (if you like the type) for teens and above. I think I will just grab another of her books, plop down in my easy chair and enjoy another good novel. Read this book and I don't think you will be disappointed.
Good grief, this is a scary book!
The premise is simple Sam, a struggling artist, has a week until her very first art exhibition, and she has yet to paint anything that's worthy of exhibiting. She decides to take a week at her uncle's remote cabin to focus on her work, but naturally, all manner of creepy things start happening once she shows up there. She sees a strange man on the dock by the lake- a man who may or may not be human. She starts painting in her sleep, and the resulting images are downright freaky. Her dreams are probably the most terrifying of all, with one particular scene involving a corpse sharing her bed that had me pulling my blankets over my head.
As with all of Darcy Coates' novels, the ending to this novel is perfect and perfectly wraps up the loose ends that were set dangling in previous chapters. I borrow most of my books on Unlimited, but this one I purchased outright- I enjoyed it that much.
